I joined the Vodafone Discover Graduate scheme in 2015 after finishing university in Sheffield studying French and Linguistics. I chose to follow the Marketing stream here at Vodafone and I am very happy with the opportunities I have been offered. The most positive and surprising part about working at Vodafone, which I didn’t expect before I started, would be the huge variety of new things that I’ve learned. It is such an open company where employees are more than happy to share ideas and experiences. In my placements, I have taken advantage of the ability we have here to network with others in different functions. I’ve learned so much about the different roles throughout the business and what people are required to do in their day-to-day activities.

If someone were to ask me if they should consider working for Vodafone, I would say definitely yes. The Graduate programme provides so many opportunities to learn new skills and get involved in different areas that aren’t just exclusive to the scheme. Vodafone doesn’t restrict you to one area; the business encourages you to move around to see where your strengths lie.

My onboarding process when I first joined the business was fun, informative and friendly. There was around 110 graduates on my intake and we all had an introduction week here at Newbury HQ before our retail placements, then another training week 2 months later before the beginning of our first business placements. It was nice to meet so many other people starting out in the same situation as me and made starting at Vodafone a lot easier.

I have found the working environment here at Vodafone to be very flexible – we are encouraged to work in the way that is best for us. No one questions you if you get up to move away from your desk; we have a library here on campus and many coffee shops where we can work. The work is challenging, as the Graduate scheme has given me the opportunity to work within 3 different areas over 2 years, but this has allowed me to develop a broad understanding of the company. My final 12-month placement has given me the chance to take on more, but my manager has helped me to keep the balance that I need. She has made sure that I have had experience through a wide variety of objectives to gain all the skills that I need to pursue my career in marketing.

In my current role, I get to do what’s right for the customer every day. The marketing team I work in sit within sales and I work closely with the account managers on a number of initiatives, which the sales team work directly with customers on. I also run Roundtables with some of our customers which is hugely insightful and interesting way to hear more about the challenges of our customers’ organisations.

Since starting the Graduate programme I have had the chance to really develop my network broadly across the business, not just within the graduate community. The atmosphere is open and friendly, with a real down to earth feel. In 5 years’ time I see myself still at Vodafone and I hope to be in a managerial position by then.

The flexibility offered at Vodafone helps me to be my best as I often use the gym on campus after work and also work from home 1 day a week. I guess that I use Vodafone’s flexible working without thinking as it is engrained within the business culture.
What I love most about my job is the variety of opportunities available to me on the Graduate programme. I’ve been exposed to a real breadth of marketing from product management, brand, demand advertising and now B2B marketing. My current role has given me exposure to a sales environment in a more customer facing role, which I really enjoy. To be successful at Vodafone, I think that the ability to work collaboratively is key – it’s important to listen and consider the ideas of others. I am happy at Vodafone because there is an open, supportive environment where I can develop and learn.
