Privacy Officer & Counsel
Location: Newbury



The Role

Reporting to the Head of Risk and Compliance, you will support VFUK in complying with data protection law through the implementation of the Vodafone Privacy Programme.

You will be legally qualified as a solicitor or barrister and have a strong knowledge of telecoms regulatory/data protection and privacy issues.

  • Advising on the implementation of privacy baseline requirements into new products and services
  • Advising on privacy risk and maintaining a privacy risk register
  • Maintaining a record of our data processing activities we undertake as controller and processor and identifying and identifying the lawful basis for the processing
  • Supporting owners of high risk data processing activities in ensuring activity is compliant with the law
  • Providing contractual and bid support as a subject matter expert to uk legal team;
  • Supporting on data breaches and notifying to regulator where necessary
  • Providing effective and timely advice relating to internal requests for disclosure of data
  • Supporting the frontline customer data excellence team in responding to enquiries from customers relating to the exercise of individual rights set out in data protection law
  • Building awareness of, and delivering training to, uk business teams on data protection and privacy issues including the promotion and development of the privacy pioneer programme
  • Providing updates to senior management on compliance with the privacy programme as required.
  • Maintaining relationships with external stakeholders including the information commissioner�s office
  • Monitoring regulatory/legislative developments and update company policies and processes as required

Responsibilities
  • Accelerating and leading the progress of embedding the Privacy Programme
  • Identifying data processing activities to ensure they are managed subject to suitable controls
  • Handling internal and external queries as necessary in relation to data protection and ensuring that VFUK can respond effectively when individuals exercise their data subject rights
  • Reporting risks and data breaches to senior management as required, and where appropriate to the regulator
  • Working with the business to seek to ensure that its strategy is achieved in a privacy compliant way
  • Providing updates on the Privacy Programme to senior management as required


Key Skills/Experience
  • Experience of managing a team with a heavy workload
  • Experience of developing junior team members
  • Proven track record of successful senior stakeholder management
  • Experience in a similar role and an understanding of the data protection risks faced by large data-driven organisations is desirable
  • Knowledge of data protection law including data protection regulation (GDPR).
  • Experience conducting data privacy compliance reviews and impact assessments
  • Ability to provide clear advice and direction even when faced with competing demands and short deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to persuade at highest levels of the organisation.  Able to deliver concise and clear advice and training according to the audience.
  • Ability to provide clear advice and direction even when faced with competing demands and short deadlines
  • Able to deal with complex issues in relation data protection/privacy and develop arguments.  Excellent level of general legal knowledge.
  • High quality drafting skills with the ability to convey complex arguments in a clear and effective manner to regulatory bodies
  • Ability to work with other members of the legal team to develop ideas and arguments internally
  • Ability to build and maintain excellent network of customer contacts across the business, other relevant industry groups/professionals
