Retail Trainers career goes from strength to strength

One of the key things for me when considering changing employers, just under 2 years ago, was that I wanted to find an employer that I could grow and develop with, that would provide me with numerous opportunities and would support me in my career plan and progression. This led me to Vodafone. The way that Vodafone encourages staff, not to just succeed in their careers, but to positively thrive, is a highly attractive offering.

When I met Shane Byrne, a Retail Trainer for Vodafone, his career achievements epitomised what I feel Vodafone stands for as an employer.

Shane started his Vodafone journey 11 years ago in our Oldham store, whilst at university. He was studying Sports Coaching - nothing at all to do with the telecoms industry. He was a self-confessed typical student, "just looking to earn a bit of beer money at the weekend". He was planning to become a PE teacher after graduation.

However, when he graduated, he decided to stay on in the store and increase his hours. He soon found that his talent in the retail sales industry, coupled with his passion for Vodafone was very lucrative and when offered a step up in to a Technical Expert role, he was keen to progress and jumped at the chance.

From this point in his career, Shane went from strength to strength, running a help and advice desk in the Trafford Centre store, being promoted into an Assistant Store Manager position and then taking a secondment in a different store as a Store Manager, commuting 90 minutes both ways, as he loved it so much.

He was soon offered a permanent Store Manager role closer to home and since then he has managed various different stores including Bolton, Bolton Middlebrook, Newcastle under Lyme, Accrington and Blackburn.

Shane has now achieved his proudest moment (so far…) having landed the role of a trainer. Competition was rife (somewhere in the region of 1000 applicants) but Shane's dedication and winning mind-set resulted in this achievement. Whilst he is not planning his next move currently, Shane is confident in the knowledge that as soon as he is ready, he will be fully supported, and with the help of his line manager will be able to take his next step on the career ladder.

For me, this story is inspirational and such a great reason to work for Vodafone. There are no limits, if you work hard, have the right attitude and commitment, the future is REALLY exciting…I'm ready, are you?
