Why Tamara loves Vodafone: Empowering the lives of people using technology and mobile connection

I really love working for a company that empowers the lives of so many using technology and mobile connection.

Having grown up on dairy farm in rural Australia, I really love working for a company that empowers the lives of so many using technology and mobile connection. This is such a great equalizer for those living in rural areas and outside the cities, which I very much relate to having been a late starter to technology due to living in a remote area.

I started my career straight from school when I joined PricewaterhouseCoopers in eSydney. I did a cadetship programme where I did university part time in the evenings and had a full-time job, so I was learning throughout my degree. I went on to qualify as a Chartered Accountant and really got a good grounding in finance and audit.

But I quickly packed the calculator away and felt the urge to get involved in volunteering and I applied to the Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development programme. This involved me living and working in the Philippines for a year on a poverty reduction programme, where I helped improve the roll out of small community businesses in rural areas. I have been able to continue to be involved in volunteering and giving back to the community in my time at Vodafone. The Vodafone Foundation is one of the main reasons I’m so proud to work at Vodafone and it’s something all employees can get actively involved in. Since joining I have cycled from Land’s End to John o’ Groats, as well as completed an ultra marathon to raise money for the Vodafone Foundation!

I came to London in 2014 with the goal to do as much travelling as possible. I re-joined PricewaterhouseCoopers and had some amazing opportunities to travel far and wide, including a business trip to Turkey in 2010 where I worked on a Vodafone assignment.

This was my first interaction with Vodafone, but I knew then it was a company I really wanted to know more about. I enjoyed the people I met in the company and the way they worked. So when an opportunity came up to join the legal team, I was eager to come on board!

My career at Vodafone has been amazing. My role has grown and expanded so much since I first joined, offering me so many new challenges and opportunities. I now lead the global compliance team which includes managing the Code of Conduct, the ‘Doing What’s Right’ engagement programme for employees, the anti-bribery, sanctions and trade controls programmes, and also the Corporate Secretariat, which is responsible for Vodafone’s listing on the London Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq in the US.
