Meet Simon: How Vodafone supported him, recognised his successes and encouraged him to be himself

I've never felt insecure or restricted by what I choose to disclose

by Simon

I joined Vodafone in November 2014 as a Retail Sales adviser leaving my role a CPW as a geek squad agent which left me feeling with limited progression opportunities. Within weeks of joining Vodafone I was immediately upskilled as a stand in technical adviser and regularly approached by experienced team members for help and support.

Fast forward 9 months and I was promoted into Retail Technical Adviser in which I developed new ways of working and supported my store and region with all things tech. After just under 2 years I moved on to my current role of Retail Assistant Store Manager within the Sunderland store in the North East region. Alongside this role I am also a Retail techteam lead where I guide 19 other techexperts to achieve Vodafone's Vision of Sales through Service, in this time I have won MVP for the North East region multiple times, outstanding contribution for services to techteam and nominated for the above and beyond category for retail week rising Star awards (unfortunately I wasn't shortlisted).

My previous employer was not so supportive of my orientation, I was pressuired by my manager to reveal my orientation before I felt ready, during my employment I didn't feel that being openly gay would allow me to progress and be my true self. From my first week at Vodafone up until now I have always been able to be honest and open about my preference and I've never felt insecure or restricted by what I choose to disclose. All of my line managers, regional manager and contacts have been respectful and supportive of my development and wellbeing.
