My first 3 and a half years after graduating from my history degree were spent as an auditor with KPMG – a great experience to see a variety of companies of different sizes, while also qualifying as an ACA with the ICAEW. Soon after qualifying I began looking to move into industry and Vodafone stood out for me from what I had heard about the working culture and the huge variety of roles that a company the size of Vodafone can offer.
I joined Vodafone in financial operations mainly looking after statutory accounting – a nice jump which gave me exposure to life in a large telco while being able to apply the knowledge and experience that I had gained while working in practice. It was strange at first being the one being audited rather than doing the auditing, but it certainly helped to be able to approach my work with an auditor’s eye. Given the highly technical nature of the role it gave me great exposure to senior executives in the business and taught me how to present technical issues in a simple manner.
After almost 2 years I moved into the Consumer Finance team to a commercial role supporting the Pay As You Go business – it was initially a sideways move but I knew it was an area I wanted to work in and gave me really good exposure to the business and allowed me to learn from more experienced finance business partners about how to support the business. I was promoted after 6 months into my current role – evidence of how Vodafone is a company is keen to develop their own people and ensure that they are continually being challenged to achieve their potential.
My current role gives me a great amount of exposure to rapidly developing areas of the business (nothing in Vodafone stays still for too long!) and I’ve really enjoyed the relationship building element of my role – as other areas of the business often rely on my financial knowledge and understanding to guide their decision making. Roles like my current one are exactly why I made the move from practice four years ago – every day I go into work knowing that I can make an impact across the business and help to guide the decisions being made to deliver better results for our customers and shareholders.
