My undergraduate degree is in Physics but then I went on to do a PHD in Computer Analysis. After my studies I actually went to work with Telefonica investigating human interaction with data; so how people use their communication devices and consequently the pattern of the data. With this background, I joined Vodafone as a Lead Data Scientist and took on two big challenges. The first was to build a new team from the beginning and the second was to mentor the team into how you can use the data we collect to really make an impact. This was a great opportunity offered to me by Vodafone to apply my knowledge but also to share it with others to make a difference. I would encourage others to consider a role within Vodafone as it’s a great opportunity to work in a big organisation and get a real sense of how far you can stretch your potential. You can learn a lot about yourself quickly and have the freedom to improve at your own pace. Nonetheless, I do find my role challenging as I am trying to push innovation and change in a company that always likes to do things the same way! I like to be able to push the motivation to do something new and my managers recognise my enthusiasm for the challenge. We are very customer-focused in what we do here at Vodafone. In my future career path, I would like to encourage Vodafone to collaborate more with universities to get more students who have specific knowledge on technology and data. As the future of technology is advancing so quickly, we need young, intelligent individuals to work with us to help us keep up with the advancements. I do what I do at Vodafone and not somewhere else because of the freedom I have with my work. I don’t have to fight to get my ideas and intentions heard; I am encouraged to have a clear mind-set of where I want to take my team. The flexibility at Vodafone encourages me to be my best as support is offered to work from more than one location. This can include days working from home but also as I live in London I can work from the Paddington office too. Alongside this, I love the people that I work with; they’re smart and we’re always learning together. Vodafone support me in forming myself into a manager. I have received super feedback after learning something new which has been really useful in my path going forward. I know I have to push innovation in my role and the process has been slower than expected so I have had to work harder to get the necessary results. A successful person at Vodafone needs to have a positive attitude – be honest with your opinions and be prepared to stand strong to be heard, but also be ready to embrace others’ ideas. Be open, flexible and always have open ears to learn at all opportunities. I am happy at Vodafone because I learn every day.
